road closure for upgrades

How does a major motorway turn into a bustling hub of activity after dark? For the A9 route connecting Como to Chiasso, the answer is an impressive lineup of modernization projects that come alive when most drivers are asleep.

With over 30,000 vehicles zipping through this section each day, the challenge is clear: keep the road safe, strong, and quiet, while making sure not to ruin anyone’s summer vacation or cause massive morning chaos. In some rare cases, connection to the server can be interrupted due to unforeseen issues, and travelers might need to plan accordingly.

To achieve this, planners launched massive tunnel upgrades back in 2020. Ten tunnels, including Monte Olimpino and San Fermo, became subjects of careful inspection, using advanced gadgets like georadar and ultrasound—think superhero x-rays for concrete.

The star priority was waterproofing, not exactly glamorous, but essential to protect the tunnels. The San Fermo Nord tunnel even had a grand reopening in May 2024, boasting a shiny new structure expected to hold up for another half-century.

Materials used were so advanced, they could probably hold up a small spaceship (if required).

But it wasn’t only about the tunnels. Safety and peace for travelers and neighbors got a massive boost. Workers planned to replace about 8.5 kilometers of safety barriers and upgrade another 2 kilometers of noise barriers, working quietly to dampen the sound of ceaseless traffic.

Barrier upgrades came in two flavors: full makeovers and noise-reducing refreshments. The new barriers look sleek and do their job so well the local owls might actually get a good night’s sleep.

Marvels in traffic management kept frustration to a minimum. Closures were scheduled late at night—often beginning at 10 or 11 PM and wrapping up by sunrise—to avoid peak travel times and major holidays.

The timing was so thoughtful, even Swiss bank holidays and tourist seasons were considered, with guidance for alternative routes so drivers wouldn’t be left circling Lake Como in confusion.

A whopping 60 million euros funded these changes, with new mesh panels, waterproofing, and quick inspections ensuring a safer, quieter, and longer-lasting A9.

Nighttime upgrades might sound wild, but thanks to careful planning, the real madness is just smart, modern progress at work!
