air quality improvements challenged

Although Lombardy is famous for its rich culture, fashion, and beautiful cities, the region is currently facing a tough challenge that’s not as easy to spot as a stylish Milanese outfit—its air quality is taking a hit. On October 14, 2025, Lombardy registered a real-time Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 134, considered “Poor” by international standards.

Over a 24-hour period, the AQI bounced between 109 and 144, showing little relief from poor air conditions. Anyone walking through its bustling cities might not see the pollution, but the air they breathe is equal to smoking about 2.1 cigarettes each day! This invisible problem stretches across all major cities, reminding everyone that sometimes, the most pressing issues are the ones you can’t see.

Cities like Venice, Sesto San Giovanni, Eraclea, Milan, and Rimini are leading the charts, unfortunately not in a good way—they’re among Italy’s most polluted places, with AQI values ranging from 144 to a staggering 152 in Venice.

Milan, known for its cutting-edge style, now faces another kind of cutting edge: poor air quality that stubbornly persists. Fine, inhalable particulates—PM2.5—are measured at 50 micrograms per cubic meter, more than double the recommended safe levels, with PM10 close behind at 59. Nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) and carbon monoxide (CO) are also above healthy thresholds, posing extra risks for children, the elderly, and anyone with asthma or heart problems. Air quality monitoring devices such as portable sensors and indoor monitors are becoming more widely used to track these pollutant levels in real time.

Despite some progress in recent years, long-term data shows a worrying pattern: Brescia’s AQI, for example, has worsened over 56% since 2020. Sesto San Giovanni saw an even more dramatic decline, jumping 76.7% compared to last year. Nearly 4 out of 10 days each year, Brescia exceeds the World Health Organization’s safe limits, serving as a wake-up call.

Lombardy has achieved moderate health risk status, but there is still a journey ahead before residents can breathe easy. The region’s struggles highlight how progress isn’t always smooth—but with awareness and action, improvement is within reach.
