Lake Como water exhibits 11 contaminants exceeding EPA MCLGs, a reminder that close monitoring and proper filtration are vital for residents.

One major concern bubbles up from the chlorine added during water treatment. When chlorine meets natural stuff floating in the lake, it forms chemicals like bromodichloromethane (BDCM)—a name that’s harder to pronounce than “pappardelle,” but a lot less tasty. Scientists classify BDCM as a probable human carcinogen, and research has tied it to changes in DNA, as well as kidney, immune system, and even spleen challenges. The lake’s depth of 425 meters contributes to the complexity of water treatment processes, making public healthcare options crucial for residents needing medical attention.

Another troublemaker is dichloroacetic acid (DCA), which the EPA thinks is likely carcinogenic to humans and has shown harm to the liver and male reproductive system in research studies. These contaminants have proven stubborn, sticking around in tap water despite treatment processes.

Residents considered most vulnerable—like children, pregnant women, and people with weak immune systems—should take extra caution, using water filters certified by NSF-53 or NSF-58 to remove nosy contaminants. Many local households have professional water testing done for peace of mind—which is always preferable to second-guessing a glass of water.

Yet, water quality isn’t the town’s only health challenge. Lake Como’s obesity rate stands at 32.3%, suggesting that gardens aren’t the only thing growing.

With a median age near 42 and distinct differences between men and women, an older population means more healthcare needs, especially as extra weight raises the risk for heart and metabolic conditions.
